The Road to Niti Valley: A Winter First

Setting Out

It began like every Dastaan trip does — with laughter, introductions, and that nervous excitement of heading into the unknown. We knew Niti Valley was special, but stepping into its winter for the first time was uncharted territory, even for us.

The road twisted along the Alaknanda and Dhauli Ganga rivers, snow dusting the mountains around us, as if nature had dressed in white just to welcome us.

Meeting the Village

Niti, tucked away near the Indo-Tibetan border, felt like a secret the world had forgotten to whisper. The stone houses stood resilient against the snow, and the smiles of the Bhotiya community warmed us more than any woolen could.

We shared stories over steaming cups of chai, learning about their traditions and the courage it takes to live where winter feels endless.

Walking Into the White

Our trek from Ghamshali led us through frozen trails, across meadows now blanketed in snow, and towards the mighty glaciers. Each step crunched beneath our boots, each breath a cloud in the crisp mountain air.

Somewhere between the silence of the valley and the roar of the rivers, we realized — this wasn’t just travel. It was surrender. To nature. To simplicity. To the moment.

Nights of Belonging

Evenings were spent the Dastaan way — around a bonfire, with music, laughter, and conversations that stretched longer than the night. In the heart of winter, we found warmth in each other.

The valley outside was frozen, but inside those moments, everything felt alive.

What Stayed With Us

The first winter journey to Niti Valley wasn’t about reaching a destination. It was about discovering resilience, beauty, and belonging where the world seems most remote.

We left with cold noses, full hearts, and stories etched forever — because the road to Niti Valley isn’t one you ever forget.
